Bone Spur Treatment

Bone spur refers to a growth of an additional bone on any part of your body. This brings in pain or discomfort to the person who has it. Bone spur treatment alleviates the pain and helps the person to lead a normal life. The bone spur is not a hard formation of a bone instead of a soft growth. Before looking at the bone spur treatment, you need to understand how bone spur occurs. Bone spur occurs as a result of pressure and stress on the area.

Aging and overweight too causes bone spur. The common areas where bone spur occurs are the spine and feet. Improper shoes also leads to bone spur. Joints such as shoulders are also subject to bone spur. Apart from aging, overweight, stress, pressure etc. wear and tear too leads to bone spur.

One cannot diagnose or identify the symptoms of bone spur formation. Instead constant pain and in some cases swelling, corns and calluses suggest that bone spur is present. This is due to tissue being built up or the bone formation rubbing against the tissue.

Although there are no specific bone spur treatment to name, once a person has been identified with bone spur formation, doctor will prescribe inflammatory drugs. This will cease to reduce the pain for some time and in some cases the pain can be eliminated. Doctors will try to find the root cause of the bone spur formation and direct the bone spur treatment towards reducing the effect. If for example, the bone spur treatment is caused due to obesity, the doctor will try to reduce the weight as a part of the bone spur treatment. This will prevent or stop further pressure being built on the bone spur formation. If the pain worsens without reducing, the last resort as bone spur treatment would be surgery.

In some cases, doctors recommend deep tissue massage as a part of bone spur treatment to alleviate the pain that occurs in that area. Other bone spur treatment includes rest, ice cube application, exercises, stretching, and medicines such as painkillers. In severe cases of bone spur treatment, doctors may prescribe injections which reduce the swelling and pain. Besides medicine, most bone spur treatment occurs as a result of fitting into tight shoes. In such cases, the doctors recommend wearing special inbuilt soles as a part of bone spur treatment. This will reduce the pressure and irritation of nerves. Physical therapy too is considered as a part of bone spur treatment. This is to be continued from 1-2 weeks with doctor’s inspection. In majority cases, bone spur treatment lasts between 4-6 weeks i.e. for the pain to cease.
