Abusive Spouse
An abusive spouse is one of the most terrifying things that someone has to live with. Domestic violence, a frighteningly common occurrence, is typically a product of an abusive spouse or boyfriend that is on a rampage. If you are in an relationship, there are some signs that you can look for to help you determine if you might have an abusive spouse.
1: Control Issues.
An abusive spouse will show signs of attempting to control your activities. This can range from financial control or social control. If you feel like you are not allowed to do anything, including visiting family or friends, it would fit into this category.
2: Jealousy.
A little bit of jealousy can be healthy for a relationship. However, if your spouse becomes possessive of you, this type of jealousy is unhealthy and is typically a symptom of abuse.
3: Aggression.
An abusive spouse will show signs of aggression. He or she may demand sex frequently, or make other demands. They will typically have the mentality of 'it is my way or the highway', and will not be above making threats to get what they desire.
4: Violence.
If you are being struck or assaulted by your partner, you most likely have an abusive spouse. There is no excuse for violence. Short tempers and this style of aggressive behavior should not be ignored. If you are struck once, it is likely you will be struck again. While some partners are willing to go through anger management, you must be extremely cautious.
If you have an abusive spouse, often the resolution is divorce. While there are cases where the abusive spouse has changed their behavior, this is the exception rather than the rule. The first step is to insist on going to a counselor. If your partner refuses, you will need to take further action. The most difficult part for someone who has been abused is to find the courage to stand up and ask for your basic rights.
If you need to get away from an abusive spouse, there are many hot lines, support groups and resources that you can make use of. Do not hesitate to ask family and friends to help you if you are trapped in this sort of situation. Domestic violence does not start over night, and can be escaped if you have the courage to help yourself out of the relationship.
